Cause
The product key is blocked either through client configuration or through other server configuration
Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

Obtain a new, legitimate product key.
Educate the customer about software piracy:
Visit the Genuine Microsoft Software homepage at http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell.
Refer to the EULA by pointing to Start>Run, typing Winver, and clicking End-User License Agreement

0xc004c001, 0xc004c008, 0xc004C812 Errors

Cause
The maximum number of unlocks allowed for retail activation has been exceeded
Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

Activate by phone.
Obtain a new product key.

0x80072EFD, 0x80072EE7, 0x80072F8F, 0x8004FE94 Errors

Cause
These errors indicate the Windows Activation client did not receive a response from the Windows Activation server. Any of the following could contribute to this issue:

The computer's date and time settings are incorrect.
General network-related failures occurred.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

Ensure the computer BIOS has the correct time.
Ensure Windows has the correct date and time settings.
Troubleshoot network connectivity:
If you are using a router, connect the computer directly to the WAN connection (Internet connection).
If you are using a third-party firewall or Internet security software, view the product documentation from the manufacturer for information about permitting HTTPS traffic (TCP port 443).
Turn off Automatic Proxy Settings:
Point to Start>Internet Explorer®.
Select Tools>Internet Options. Select the Connections tab and click the LAN Settings button.
Remove the check mark beside Automatically Detect settings.
Use an alternate activation method such as activation by phone.

0x80070426 (ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_ACTIVE) Error

Cause
The Software Licensing Service is not running.

Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

Open the Service Control Manager.
Double-click Software Licensing Service.
Check the service status to see if it is running. If the service has been disabled, change the start-up type to Automatic.

Unable to Change the Product Key

Unable to Change the Product Key
After installing Windows Vista, you may be unable to change the product key to activate Windows.

Cause
Any of the following could contribute to this issue:

The current installation of Windows Vista is not activated.
The new product key is invalid.
You have exceeded the limit of product key changes.
Product key changes for the same activation configuration ID are limited to 10.
Product key changes for different activation configuration IDs are limited to five.
The new product key is for another product (SKU).

Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:

If Windows is not activated, follow these steps:
Start Windows, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
Use normal activation procedures to activate Windows.
If activation fails, use Windows Activation troubleshooting techniques.
Use the troubleshooting techniques in "How to Validate the Product Key."
If the product key change is a product switch, verify the SKU update is valid.
Get the installed SKU by pointing to Start>Run and typing WINVER.
Refer to the product chart to check if it is a step up.

Activating Windows Vista

Windows Vista can be activated using the following methods:

Internet (default)
Phone or SMS
Modem


Activating Automatically
When you are ready to activate Windows Vista, you can start the Activation Wizard through one of the following ways:

System Control Panel
Windows Help and Support – From the table of contents, select All help>Getting Started>Installing, activating and registering Windows>Activation>Activate Windows on this Computer.
System tray icon – Three days into the grace period, the activation icon appears in the system tray. Click the icon to start the Activation Wizard.
Activating by Phone
You can activate Windows Vista by phone using either of the following methods:

Method 1
Point to Start>Run, type SLUI.EXE in the Instant Search field, and press .
When prompted for administrative privilege, click Allow.
Click Activate Windows Online Now.
After the activation fails, select Show me other ways to activate.
Choose Phone activation and follow the onscreen steps.
Method 2
Point to Start>Run, type SLUI.EXE 4 in the Instant Search field, and press .
Select the nearest location and click Next.
When prompted for administrative privilege, click Allow.
Follow the onscreen steps.
Checking Activation Status
You can check the activation status using the following steps:

Type System in the Instant Search field.
Choose System from the list.
Check the status under Windows Activation at the bottom of the page.
From this window, you can also change the product key or perform manual activation if activation has not yet taken place.

Enable Windows Aero

The following settings must be enabled to use the Aero User Interface:

32-bit color
Monitor refresh rate higher than 10 Hz
Windows Vista™ theme
Windows Aero color scheme
Window frame transparency enabled

Set the color to 32 bit
Right-click the Desktop, and click Personalize.
Click Display Settings.
Click the drop-down menu under Colors, and select Highest (32 bit).
Click Apply and then OK.
The color is set to 32 bit.

Verify the Monitor Refresh Rate Is Higher than 10 Hertz
Right-click the Desktop, and click Personalize.
Click Display Settings.
Click Advanced Setting.
Click the Monitor tab.
Click the drop-down menu under Screen Refresh Rate and select a refresh rate that is higher than 10 Hertz.

Use the Windows Vista Theme
Right-click the Desktop, and click Personalize.
Click Theme.
Click the drop down menu, and select Windows Vista.
Click OK.

Select the Windows Aero Color Scheme
Right-click the Desktop, and click Personalize.
Click Window Color and Appearance.
Click Open classic appearance properties for more color options.
Click to select Windows Aero in the Color Scheme section.
Click Apply and then OK.


Enable Window Frame Transparency
Right-click the Desktop, and click Personalize.
Click Window Color and Appearance.
Verify that the Enable Transparency check box is checked.
Click OK.
Windows Aero transparency is enabled.
